Hanging in the Sun

Hanging? In the sun? Not talking about laying on the beach, or at a secluded sunny area. Not talking about plants. Not talking about a trip to Hawaii.

I’m talking of the joy of hanging clothes on the clothesline !  Hanging sheets, towels, and blankets on the clothesline!  Another thing of the past, but my present. An activity I actually enjoy.

Fortunately, I have a huge yard with a huge custom welded clothesline that I love.    “How trashy” , some people say. It’s “trashy” when you see clothes that are strung on fences, trees, and whatever. My clothesline is the absolute best. It’s really long, over 20 ft., has just the right spacing between rows.  Why not use solar power to create great-smelling clothes, towels, and sheets? Forget the chemical smell of dryer sheets to make fabric smell “fresh.” Besides, we live in the desert.  In the hot summer months, we would hang up one load and those would already be dry when we hung up the next load !

I grew up hanging clothes outdoors. All our older generations did the same. How did it become “low-brow”, “no-class”, and an “embarrassment?”

I had some long periods of not having the luxury of outdoor fabric hanging. Some periods were years long. I dried my things in a dryer, like everyone else. I know not everyone can or even would, hang in the sun. I’m glad I had the opportunity to raise my kids using the clothesline, from their babyhood ( nothing beats the sun for those cotton diapers)  all the way up to their teen-age jeans. As soon as they could reach the clothesline, they helped out too. I have a dryer that I bought second-hand, from friends, in 1975.  It gets used when wanted or needed.  Amazingly enough, my dryer still works just fine…

Lancaster Restaurant Fun Summer Events

BeX kicked off the summer fun with “Meet Me at the Bandstand”

One part dancing, two parts music, delicious food, and a whole lot of outdoor fun is the recipe that made the Sierra Toyota Scion Concert Series the best way to welcome the arrival of summer to the Antelope Valley.

“People have been visiting downtown Lancaster for more than a century,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “Today, retail outlets, professional services, and fine restaurants continue to make downtown a natural gathering spot. On Thursday, the City is providing yet another reason to make the trip, as patrons can spend a warm summer night enjoying great music, sampling wonderful wines, and feasting on our many downtown delights.”

http://bexbarandgrill.com 661.945.2399 Lee Matalon performs in front of BeX during the Sierra Toyota Summer Concert Series on Lancaster BLVD.

Meet at the Bandstand throughout the summer to enjoy the sounds of local favorites, including Wild Side performing on July 14th; the Queen Nation Tribute Band on July 21st; and the Runaway Train Band who will close out the concert series on August 18th.

In addition to great Special Events like the concert series, Bex Bar and Grill hosts a number of great weekly events to keep the party rolling.

Themes

If you’ve listened to me on the radio,  or read my writing on some other forum, you know that I often run across themes in life.  Themes that show up, and smack me in the office, in my personal life, on TV, on the radio.  If I call it a theme, it’s because God, or the universe, or someone or something wants me to pay attention.

This week’s theme is basics. Three simple health basics.

1.  WATER.  And lots of it.  Half your weight in water in ounces.  For example: someone who weights 200 pounds should drink 100 ounces of water per day!   Really? Most people ask.  Really!   The next comment is “Well I don’t like water!”  Well that’s like saying I don’t like skin.  It’s what your body is made of, for heavens sake.  So here is my water challenge.  For 1 week, place the amount of water on your counter, and carry what you should be drinking  around with you and see how much you actually drink…Your bag will get lighter as the day passes.  Add a splash of fruit juice for flavor if you must.  For each caffeinated beverage add another 2 cups of water!   And the bottled 0 calorie flavored waters are not good!  Here’s why…

2.  The crap in your food!  Here’s the challenge:  Check every product in your pantry and fridge and remove  any that have any of these three things: asparatame, msg, high fructose corn syrup.   Pull them all out and look at them.  You may be surprised.

3.  Move your body!  20 minutes of movement a day (like walking) will immediately make you feel better.  Just do it.
