My Father, which art in Heaven…

In honor of my father, who passed in 2003, these are the things I loved about him:

Tops on the list was his sense of humor.

He was always making little gadgets, some of which I still have to this day.

His sense of humor.

He was a carpenter so he smelled like fresh shaved wood.

His sense of humor.

His willingness to fix things for me, when he was younger and still lived here on the mainland.

His sense of humor.

His sense of adventure, was willing to try just about anything.

His sense of humor.

He tackled life, in a huge way.

His sense of humor.

His friendliness, we always had people visiting.

His sense of humor.

BEING MOM

At the conclusion of another Mother’s Day, I have a few thoughts….

I miss my mother, she’s been gone for 25 years now. She was a fun-loving, no-nonsense, great mom to have when I was a kid. To those people who still have their mothers -APPRECIATE them!

I love my kids, who are now twenty (soon to be 21) and twenty-five. They were great kids growing up (most of the time-hah!), did fantastic in school and are just really nice human beings. What’s interesting to me is this: I was NOT going to have children. As a young woman, I loved my life as it was and had no desire to change it. My “plate” was full with a fantastic husband, family, many friends, a great job, and continual joy in all! I had no “biological time clock” that was ticking or anything remotely like it. I thoroughly believed I was not going to have kids and I was happy with that decision. I went through my twenties and up to my 31st year of life and something happened that turned the earth on it’s axis. I unexpectedly and shockingly became pregnant. OMG! I had spent years and years avoiding just that. How did this happen? OMG!!!

I became a mother just two weeks shy of turning 32. I LOVED my little baby. She changed mine and my husband’s life totally. I loved holding her and feeding her. She was a sweet baby that turned into a sweet child. Well, we couldn’t let her go through life being an only child as we both came from large families (I’m the middle child of five kids, my husband is the youngest of eight). When she was nearly four years old, we thought O.K., let’s have another. This time – on purpose!  We had fun making that happen. We had never done that before, TRY to become pregnant! It was always the opposite – NOT to become pregnant. Weird…

When I was 36, I became a mom for the second time. Wow, two kids now. A lot more work. A lot more joy. They grew older and occasionally would have nasty fights, as most siblings do. I always remembered my father telling me “When you have one kid, you become parents. When you have two, you become a referee.” It’s true. So, I became a very busy mom. Working, child care issues, school assemblies, being a “band mom” for four years for one child, going to volleyball games for seven years for the other child, all of those things and more. Living 25 miles out of town didn’t make it any easier. When I turned 45, I had a 9 year old child and a 13 year old child. I never, in a million years, thought that’s where I would be at that age. WOW.

Now that my kids are young adults, I cannot perceive my life any other way. We are a tight family of four to this day. I sometimes still can’t believe I gave birth to two children. Every Mother’s Day, I’m reminded of how LUCKY I am…

We are pleased to announce the arrival of a new artist that we now represent in our gallery- Michael Jones ! His work is exciting, innovative, and fresh !

He was born on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and realized in his youth that art was his passion. He is currently pursuing his Bachelors Degree in Multimedia and  at ITT Technical Institute in Sylmar, CA. When he isn’t busy painting, or going to school, his favorite pastimes are skateboard riding, dirt-bike riding, camping, and watching sports. Inspired by his parents artistic ability, he enjoys charity events and art shows that contribute to the community.

Jim Seargeant and Don Blumenshien at the Rock Inn

If you are a music lover, then the melodic, dynamic, and talented duo of Don and Jim are a treat to listen to ! They have been playing together for 30 years now and have a real “connection” to their music. Jim and Don first met way back in 1971, attending the same high school here in the Antelope Valley. They started playing seriously together in 1980. Since then, they have played on numerous occasions in numerous places ! This includes the Lancaster Performing Arts Center, and just about every public venue ( The Rock Inn, Cedar Art Center, Lakes and Valleys Art Guild and many more) here in the Antelope Valley and beyond. These artists have played at many private functions as well.

They have a CD out called The Goods but unfortunately is sold out . It has all original material and they have so many more new compositions, Don and Jim hope to put out another CD soon. Jim’s earlier influences are Paul Simon, James Taylor and of course, the great Eric Clapton. Which leads us into other types of music these great musicians, Jim and Don play. When Jim was asked which type of guitar do you like best, “electric or acoustic ?”, he thought about it and honestly said he loves both ! He had a blues band for a while that was absolutely great. In addition to the blues, Jim plays literally all types of music. Don, like any great musician, loves all music too. He has been lately really enjoying playing Spanish guitar, not to be confused with flamenco guitar. It’s all in the fingering and Don has the talent to do it all ! If you have an opportunity to hear these two together, apart, or with other musicians, be sure not to miss it !

Description

Author Event: Zoë Sharp

zoe sharpCome to the library and meet Zoë Sharp, author of the Charlie Fox series.

A starred review in Booklist called her newest novel, The Fourth Day, ‘Must reading for fans of action-packed, hard-edged thrillers.’

About the series:

Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Fox has been described as a female version of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher. Like Reacher, Charlie’s background is military. She was a first-class shot who was selected for Special Forces training, but that’s where it all went horribly wrong. Chucked out of the army in disgrace, Charlie drifts through a variety of jobs in the early books, teaching self-defence, working nightclub doors, and house-sitting on a run-down housing estate. But then she meets up again with a spectre from her army past − one of her old training instructors, Sean Meyer.

Sean is now back in civvy street himself, involved in the dangerous world of exclusive close protection. After he asks Charlie to go and find out what happened to one of his men who was killed at a shady bodyguard training school in Germany, he offers Charlie a job and, after a rocky start, she embarks on a new career as a bodyguard.

Whatever her own misgivings − and the doubts of her family − being a bodyguard is the perfect legitimate outlet for someone with her lethal abilities.

Read on and find out why the Chicago Tribune described Charlie as: ‘Ill-tempered, aggressive and borderline psychotic, Fox is also compassionate, introspective and highly principled: arguably one of the most enigmatic − and coolest − heroines in contemporary genre fiction.’

Treating OTHERS as YOU would like to be treated.

Just thinking about the strife and tribulation that goes on among people that I know and it makes me sad. Hence, this blog…. The title above is really the ONLY way to live your life and if you live it that way, gee, a lot of unhappiness goes away. And happiness will come your way, in many ways. If only the people that really need to HEED this, would, life would be so much more simpler and enjoyable!!

We all know people that love to “stir the pot”, create trouble and turmoil, and others are actually happier being mad about something. Some of those individuals I have eliminated from my life to bring more peace to myself and my family. Some I can’t eliminate. To those, I wish peace and harmony within themselves. I rise above their unhappiness and hope that one day, they “see the light”.

PEACE TO ALL !
