Multi-talented artist Dennis Calaba

Striking a note between Impressionism and Realism, Dennis Calaba’s style is difficult to categorize. His influences range from Homer to Wyeth. Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, CA., he studied art at Cal State, Northridge and the Art Center of Design, Pasadena. He has been a commercial artist since 1977. Having worked in the entertainment, advertising, and aerospace worlds, it has expanded his talents and interests. He paints portraits, landscapes, seascapes, automotive art, murals, and animal subjects. Dennis chooses whether he will work in oil, watercolor, pastels, acrylic, guache, or pen & ink, depending on what will best suit the subject matter.

His inspiration is found in nature’s bountiful compositions. Underlying in each of his artistic works is a mood that he hopes will be communicated to the viewer. Location is not as paramount to this artist as capturing that “mood”. He believes that a successful work of art invites people to enter, bringing their own feelings into it. Dennis is comfortable working in his studio or outdoors. Both of these methods have advantages that he likes to incorporate in his work. It is this mixture of “capturing the moment” and “creating a mood” that give his art their dynamics.

He has gained wide-spread recognition from many awards in juried art shows, exhibitions and several galleries that range from Carmel Valley to Wrightwood to Lake Hughes. His works also hang in businesses and numerous private collections.
He has a wife and two daughters and resides in the far eastern Antelope Valley, where there are gorgeous sunrises and sunsets visible from his home everyday !
We, at the Graphic Experience are pleased to have his artwork hang here in our gallery. Come see it.

Equine and Fine Artist Sal Vasquez

Sal, a native of Southern California, grew up in the shadows of the Arrroyo Seco in Alhambra, also known as “artists alley” because of the artists who lived and painted there. Those artists included Sam Hyde Harris, Don Miles, Karl Albert, Jimmy Swinnerton, Frank Tenny Johnson, and in the summer months, Norman Rockwell.
Sal grew up in San Gabriel, a city next to Alhambra. In his mid twenties, he met and struck up a lifelong friendship with Sam Hyde Harris and accompanied Harris, Miles, and Albert on painting trips.
From his three friends, Sal developed the tools needed to be a plein air artist and today still looks forward to painting the surrounding area of the high desert of Southern California.
Formal education included the Art Center of Design in Pasadena, Ca. where Sal met movie poster artist Reynold Brown and western artist Don “Putt” Putman. Tom Putman, “Putt”s brother and Sal’s high school coach encouraged Sal to enroll at the Art Center and through these artists, Sal became interested in Western art.
Deciding to take up his brushes and paints, Sal started a new challenge to complete unfulfilled goals. He considers himself privileged to be given the opportunity to express himself through his paintings.
For the past few years, Sal has been painting commission paintings of horses. “I enjoy the challenge of painting horses, they are incredible animals – very strong, regal, and intelligent”. Sal also enjoys painting the fast fading lifestyle of the ranchers, cowboys, and cowgirls of the high desert.
” I have a feeling when I paint and want others to feel it when they are viewing the paintings. It’s just something that comes from within. I can’t describe the feeling, but it’s there in each painting”.

Come to our gallery at the Graphic Experience http://www.graphic-experience.com for a closer look at his gorgeous works !
