What’s going O.N. with Improv in the AV?

In the Antelope Valley, there is a large theatre and acting community, and included in the art of acting, there’s improvisation acting, or better known as Improv. One group that is outstanding right now is the group O.N. Improv.

Improv is the practice of acting, singing, talking and reacting, of  creating, in the moment actions. Basically, everything is made up on the spot in response to the connection to one or more people involved with the group.

O.N. Improv started in 2009 and was founded by Chris Murphy, as it states on their facebook page, He formed the Improv Club under a local theater group withMelissa Martin.  He is no longer involved with the group, but new  faces have come to join the stage along the way  including Andrew PariAnthony MooreShannon HayRoy Ellison, Casey Hills, Jeff Maki, Wesley King, and Mike Geriarte. Together these fine young men and women collaborate together and meet each week inside the walls of  Lancaster’s Cedar Center to practice and enhance their skills as actors and comedians alike. Every first Wednesday of the month,  The members of O.N Improv put their talent to work for the public’s entertainment at Butler’s Coffee House in Palmdale where they enthrall the ever-growing crowd of supporters in the theatre world.

If you would like more information about joining Improv, or would just like to see more what they are about,

you may contact Melissa at onimprov@yahoo.com and make sure you check out the monthly shows at Butler’s Coffee if you get the opportunity! Their next show will be  Wednesday August 3rd. Show starts at 7pm, so don’t be late!

Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale…on the BLVD

661.942.1103

What a great day on the BLVD.

Today is day one of Team Good Life Bakers – Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale.

100_1148-1

The event is Thursday July 14th from noon to 6pm, and Saturday July 16th from noon to 4pm. The bake sale is to raise money for this great organization; whos’ mission it is to end childhood hunger in America by 2015.

Chef Clark Tonkin works two jobs here in the AV…afterwhich…around midnight he has been baking. He has been baking for weeks!

One of the best kept secrets in the entire Antelope Valley is the JP Eliopulos Hellenic Center. This ultra plush facility not only has the beautiful grounds, and interior (think Belagio Hotel in Las Vegas plush)… within 100 miles. It also has a huge, state of the art commercial kitchen.

Hellenic Center Interior. This seats up to 325 guests for weddings receptions, corporate meeting, etc…

Clark has been making dough, perfecting grenache, baking cakes, cookies, lemon bars, dipping all sorts of items in chocolate, and making the most decadent fresh strawberry butter cream frosting.

I bought a dozen cupcakes for the staff at Aven’s.

They were gone in minutes.

City of Lancaster to Begin Offering Farmers’ Markets on The BLVD this Thursday

The City of Lancaster announced today that The BLVD will now feature a weekly Farmers’ Market on Thursdays.  In partnership with Raw Inspiration, a non-profit operator for California Certified Farmers’ Markets, the City is offering citizens yet another way to live healthier and be proactive about personal wellness.

“I cannot stress enough how important it is for our citizens to have access to fresh and affordable healthy foods,” stated Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “The addition of this farmers’ market on The BLVD gives everyone an opportunity to support local vendors, while making health-smart purchasing decisions.  Conveniently located in the downtown area, this market will attract both residents and the business community.”

Beginning this Thursday, July 14th, and continuing every Thursday thereafter from 3pm to 8pm, the farmers’ market will take place on The BLVD between Date and Ehrlich.  Fresh in-season produce and fruit will be available, as well as organic and prepared foods; arts and crafts; and flowers.  In accordance with the City Council’s initiative to create a more health-conscious community, the farmers’ market is geared toward educating adults and children on how to improve their eating habits, fight obesity, practice proper nutrition, engage in an active lifestyle, and enhance overall well-being.

“Farmers’ markets are popular because they offer a wide variety of top-quality goods at low direct-sale prices,” said Lancaster Director of Parks, Recreation and Arts Bob Greene.  “We wanted to partner with an experienced, reputable management company who will screen all vendors based upon high-quality, affordable products.  Raw Inspiration fits these criteria, adding us as their 20th market location.”

Raw Inspiration’s mission is to educate children and adults on the importance of a healthy diet, especially the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables daily. To accomplish this mission, they have set up a program where growers can distribute their produce at neighborhood farmers’ markets.

“We are always eager to partner with like-minded organizations who understand the significance of growing a healthy happy community. Conceptually, a farmers’ market has always been our hope for The BLVD, and we look forward to this new venture,” added Mayor Parris. This is only the beginning of a local staple we plan to grow continuously. We encourage everyone to come out and support our new weekly market.

Meet me at the Bandstand

One part dancing, two parts music, delicious food, and a whole lot of outdoor fun is the recipe that makes the Sierra Toyota Scion Concert Series the best way to welcome the arrival of summer to the Antelope Valley. On Thursday, June 16th, the City of Lancaster will kick off the Summer Concert Series with “A Night of Wine & Music” in Downtown Lancaster.

“People have been visiting downtown Lancaster for more than a century,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “Today, retail outlets, professional services, and fine restaurants continue to make downtown a natural gathering spot. On Thursday, the City is providing yet another reason to make the trip, as patrons can spend a warm summer night enjoying great music, sampling wonderful wines, and feasting on our many downtown delights.”

Pair the musical sounds with a wine tasting hosted on the bar patio or bring your own lawn chair to just relax and enjoy the music. Local restaurant favorites, including the Lemon Leaf Café, will provide tasty meals on the go which can be enjoyed as you listen to the evening’s entertainment.

“We are very pleased to be in a partnership with the City of Lancaster.  The inaugural season of the Sierra Toyota Concert Series promises to bring great entertainment downtown. This is an exciting opportunity to promote Sierra Toyota as a premier auto sales facility in the Antelope Valley and to meet our customers in a relaxed and festive environment,” said Paul Ondo, General Manager, Sierra Toyota Scion of Lancaster.

Meet at the Bandstand throughout the summer to enjoy the sounds of local favorites, including Wild Side performing on July 14th; the Queen Nation Tribute Band on July 21st; and the Runaway Train Band who will close out the concert series on August 18th.

For more information about the Sierra Toyota Scion Concert Series, please contact the City of Lancaster Parks, Recreation & Arts Department at (661)723-6077.
